You know you have taste when...

I was just watching 'The First Time' one of the new episodes of Glee and I noticed something rather familiar hanging on the wall in Blaine's bedroom behind Kurt.

I have the exact same vintage map of Europe currently hanging in my lounge room. Clearly I must have good taste if I picked the same map as a fictional gay guy who loves singing, is in show choir and wears bow ties almost as good as Chuck Bass.

Just another reason to <3 Glee!

Special Others: Suzie Blue

Susan Hatchett is not only an intelligent, wise, sexy, talented woman and the artist behind my Knight in Shining Armour picture, she's also a special kind of friend.

I've known and loved my other best mates since we had cooties (Callan: besties from day one of grade one,) for more than half my life (Nikki: bonkers together since '99,) or from the days of the high school yard (Meegs and Milly: fellow trashbag winos). But Suz and I found each other as I was easing in to my 20s and she was ever so gracefully easing out of hers.

Becoming really close friends with someone new in your 20s is a special thing and one that I had never previously experienced. Sure, I had made friends with people other than my high school crowd, but they were work friends, party friends, travelling friends or friends of friends. That's not to say they aren't all amazing, interesting individuals, but none of them really got me like my other besties.

The best friendships you make are the ones that hum quietly in the background of your life without creating too much interfering noise. Bit by bit, the melody of the friendship grows louder and clearer until one day the music swells to a crescendo and one of you wonders aloud: how did we even get to be so close? You both pause for a second to think about it, but neither of you really know the answer, it all just sort of happened.

Then it's like you have known each other forever and as far as you can see into the future, you will always know this person. Before you know it you're each others' 'Knight in Shining Armour' and no matter what you've made a friend for life.

Pretty in Pink

This is one of my favourite corners of my house. The collection of mismatching glass bottles have been scavenged from op shops, after nights of boozing and one even once contained a condiment in my fridge. The antique table was my parents answer to my persistent begging for a writing desk of my own, and was the first place that I sat and dreamt up stories when I was little. A vintage suitcase stashed underneath, complete with old travel stickers, offers the promise of escaping to foreign lands. Pretty pink blooms make this little nook look and smell like spring.

Back with a bang!

Before:

After:

I have been absent for some time, and am once again guilty of letting other things get in the way of my little corner of heaven in Blogland where I share with you all the things I do. But my hiatus has not been in vain. I have lots of exciting new things to share with you, including my lounge room makeover. Best of all, the total cost came in just under $100.

I have really been drawn to industrial kind of furniture lately, and I think you all know how much I like reusing old things, so it seemed only natural to combine the two. I scored the wooden pallets free from one of the business near my office (working in an industrial area may not have many good cafes for lunching, but it does have it's benefits). I also got the foam mattresses off Gumtree, one of my favourite places to go scavenging for bargains (they were $10 and are in pretty good condition — and so comfortable!)

The next step was to cut the pallets down to size to fit the foam mattresses. Admittedly I did do this step the hard way and cut each pallet with a hand saw, but I was a little afraid of botching them to use my jigsaw for the very first time. And Dad wasn't around to help me. I then sanded the fronts of the pallets, not bothering about the sides that were going to face to walls to save time.

Some single fitted sheets (50% off on sale) and a few new throw pillows topped off with an hour of one Saturday afternoon spent putting it all together, was all it took to finish off my brand new lounge room. It is perfect for chilling out to watch a movie, read a book or to gather around when friends come over. Just ask my girlfriends, we recently spent a Sunday afternoon watching Bridesmaids together lounging around. My housemates are also justifiably pleased.

I also dug my round coffee table (below) out of the garage, an old favourite thrifted from the side of the road one particularly entertaining afternoon in St Lucia with Smiley. I had some left over contact paper that I had bought to line draws with and covered the table top with it to blend it with the red cushions on the couch.  I love the little shelf underneath and my stack of vintage hardcovers.

My new couch is also a handy little shelf for storing magazines. I don't want to shove too much stuff into the pallets but it IS a rather convenient little hideaway.

Stay tuned for more of my makeovers, and let me know what you think about my extremely comfortable pallet couch.

Special Others: Anne Day

Today is my mum, Anne Day’s birthday. She is a pretty amazing woman, as anyone who has met her would attest. Not only did she teach me how to be a lady (even though at times, I don’t always heed her advice) but she taught me everything I know about sewing and craft and for that I am forever grateful. I am very much looking forward to raiding her sewing room when I am home in Mackay next week, just like she used to do with her mum.

Best of all Mum made me this quilt when I was 12 years old and I have treasured it every since, and boy is it warm! (Almost as good as a Mum hug!) So this one is for the most important woman in my life, Mum. Love you, and Happy Birthday.

Cumin Lentil Vegie Loaf

Another amazing new vegetarian win. This recipe was simple, quick and so very tasty! I modified the original a little, using only one tin of lentils and adding extra spices, including garam masal and a little tumeric and added shredded spinach into the side salad. Best thing about this dish, it is delicious cold the next day! Actually, I might go have a slice of left overs now.

In the Bedroom: Part 2

This is the other bedside table in my room. The white chair was the very first piece of furniture I ever restored. I found it on the side of the road in my first year in Brisbane in dire need of some tender love and care. The back was coming loose and it was covered in hideous forest green paint that was peeling off all over the place. As it was my first foray into furniture restoration it took a very long time to complete and some hard hours with paint stripper (I learnt very quickly that paint stripper is NOT kind to skin) but I am so glad I rescued it, because now the chair is one of my favourite pieces.

Dressed with a little Ikea lamp, some sweet smelling dried lavender (my favourite) and a pile of vintage penguin books, the chair looks right at home as my bedside table. And the white pom pom on the floor next to the chair is another of my creations - the things you can do with tissue paper!

Things I love: Snail Mail

I think one of the best simple pleasures in life is receiving a hand written letter in the mail. Luckily my lovely friends know this about me and humour me and have sent a lot of postal love from all around the world this year so far, which was topped off by a beautiful letter from my friend Ky in the my letter box today from the States. Thank you all, keep the post coming!

Pink Deliciousness

On a whim I cooked this delicious Beetroot Risotto for dinner the other night from a totally new recipe. It was the first risotto I have made in more than a year, as my last effort was rather an epic gluggy fail. But since moving into my new house in February, which is complete with a beautiful gas stove top (LOVE) I thought I should give it another attempt, now that I have reliable temperature control.

I found this recipe for a vegetarian beetroot, walnut and goats' cheese risotto and I think the main reason I was so drawn to it was that it was pink! I have never eaten nor seen pink risotto before. Best of all it turned out to be delicious as well, which I was sincerely hoping it would, but was skeptical there for awhile as I have never cooked anything with beetroot as the base.

As far as risotto goes, this was fairly easy to make too (no added roasting pumpkin or other vegies in the oven). I also used feta cheese instead of goats' cheese and added extra leafy greens for goodness, and the leftovers were delicious for lunch yesterday as well. Total, unexpected win!

In the Bedroom: Part 1

In a mad fit of pre spring cleaning I have been reorganising my bedroom and giving it some big touch ups over the last few weeks. My travel inspired bedside table is just the beginning in the series of what I have created in the only room in the house that is all mine, (although credit to my lovely housemates, they pretty much let me decorate how I wish!)

I was inspired by this picture to create my bedside table, and the best thing about this project is that I already had all the materials in my house, just begging to be used! The red suitcase I have had since I first moved to Brisbane in 2007 and have carted it from house to house in the numerous times I have moved over the years. It was originally salvaged for a prop for a friend's play and she was kind enough to bequeath it to me when the play was over, thanks Phil.

The bottom two suitcases are spoils of the op shop mission Nikki and I took to Ipswich a few months ago. I spotted them as soon as we walked in, and just as I suspected they were a total bargain! Best of all the green one is still sporting an ancient airline tag (from the old days of Ansett) for Brisbane, which makes the suitcase even more special.

And finally, I topped it off with a picture of a vintage map with the quote "Wherever you go, go with all your heart" which was created by my lovely friend Amy. I bought the frame for $1 at a cent sale at a school one Saturday morning, and painted it white with a bit of left over paint I had lying around. The lamp was from an op shop, the photo frame from a garage sale, (the picture is my Mum and Nana out for a day of shopping circa 1960), the alarm clock is Ikea and the little jar is DIY moisturiser

Overall I am pretty pleased with my travel bedside table, and it gave new life and a new use for things that I just had lying around waiting for the perfect spot in my house.

Indian Spiced Red Lentil Soup

This soup is one of my favourite things to cook, it's quick, easy, cheap, vegan and DELICIOUS! I have even served this for fervent meat eaters and one friend who doesn't really like chunky soup and they all loved it! Best of all, once you buy all the core ingredients they will make at least four batches of this soup.

I used:
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 brown onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup korma curry paste
  • 2/3 cup red lentils, rinsed
  • 1/4 cup pearl barely, washed (soaked if you have time)
  • 400g tin of diced tomatoes
  • 4 cups vegetable stock (Massel is best)
  • 1/2 bunch of fresh coriander
  • 2 ripe tomatoes
  • 1 packet of pappadums
To make, simply heat the oil in a large pot over medium-high heat then add onion. Cook, stirring for 3-4 minutes or until softened. Add curry paste and stir to combine.

Then stir in all remaining ingredients and cover. Bring to the boil then reduce heat to low. Simmer for 30 minutes or until barley is tender. Divide between bowls. Top with fresh coriander, serve with pappadums (which can be cooked in the microwave to avoid oily deep frying).

The day Amy discovered this little gem was a very good one.

Vintage Linens

One of my favourite things to scour the thrift stores for are vintage linens. As far as I am concerned, the bolder the patterns, the better. Going vintage is good for the purse strings too, this funky retro table cloth was just $2. But best of all, you know these linens are good quality because they have already been around for decades. Without sounding like too much of a nana, they just don't make 'em like this anymore.

Girls Gone Wild... Op Shopping

During the uni holidays Nikki and I went on a few op shop adventures. While I love to frequent the ops and often just go for a quick browse, N and I were on a mission: prom was fast approaching and we needed dresses.

I realise in Australia we usually call the ‘Prom’ a ‘Formal’ and being in our early 20s, we were about six years late on the prom dress shopping. But our temporary insanity wasn’t without reason, we were planning a massive 80s Prom Party for two of our dear friends, and what’s Prom without a fantastic dress (or in the ‘80s a fantastically foul dress)? So our op shop missions were focused on hunting down taffeta, shoulder pads and lace.

We went deep into the ‘burbs tracking taffeta and our search led us into some terrifying moments in Ipswich and Logan. (For those of you who don’t know, Ipswich and Logan are surrounding ‘cities’ of Brisbane. Ipswich in particular is an older, quite quaint town, as long as you stay in the main street. Mostly ‘The Switch’ and Loganville are the native habitats of the boganis, a demoralising mutant strain of Australian rednecks, also known as bogans.)

Nevertheless we had a great time sifting through the op shops while taking in the local culture and sights. We also had fun ‘checking in’ to the places we visited on Facebook, like the Ipswich Magistrates Court, Centrelink, and the Ipswich cemetery. We had a gourmet meal of Hungry Jacks for lunch (dine in!) and even sped away from a Lifeline like criminals escaping with hot loot (really we just mistook the warehouse for an actual store and were scared of the creepy workwear clad men giving us weird looks). I even scored the macramé owl from Friday’s post for $2.

But it wasn’t until we ventured to Logan that we both found our Prom dresses. Being a Saturday morning, N decided to take a little break from dress shopping to try her hand at some sports instead. I swear, it was the most fun I have ever had watching sport. I think fishing is the winner, N. Perhaps I should pop down and buy you the red fishing rod?

Wardrobe Door Makeover

Before:

After:

One day in an uncharacteristic bout of fitness enthusiasm I was out on a walk. After an hour of powering along the Brisbane River, I was winding through my neighbourhood on my way home and I passed an old wooden wardrobe door leaning up against a retaining wall on the side of the road.

Of course, I stopped walking and wandered over to inspect this discarded, somewhat useless item that someone had clearly placed there for anyone who wished to take it. The door was just made out of cheap pine and looked like it had been there on the side of the road for awhile. So I decided that I didn't need it, trying to convince self that I didn't want to turn into one of those people who just collect all manner of random useless things and never do anything with them, and I kept on walking.

Not five steps later, I had a brilliant idea, ran back and grabbed the door and carried it half a kilometre home, which garnered a lot of weird looks from people.

I sanded it back, bought some paint and turned it into a whole new amazing blackboard, for just under $30. It currently lives in my lounge room and is always adorned with favourite quotes and song lyrics. I have also been known to use it for birthday wishes for my housemates and friends and particularly exciting countdowns (like Christmas).

PS Props to whoever can tell me what song the current quote is from. I need song title, artist and album... GO!

Treasure Hunting Spoils

Hello lovelies!

I do apologise that my self-imposed study hiatus turned into a slightly more extended break than originally planned. I spent my mid year uni holidays mostly kicking around Brisbane searching for treasure and hanging with my friends, so I will also share some of those adventures with you all over the coming weeks.

Now it’s the first week back at school and my last semester before I graduate at the end of the year. I’m feeling a little nostalgic about finishing my degree and also terrified about going out into the real world and being a grown up! But for now I’m feeling inspired and ready to share my crafty ideas with you all.

Below is one of my favourite op shop treasures that I have brought home over the last month or so, and is now hanging in my lounge room. And, as usual, costing just $2, it is pure bargain gold!

Long live ‘70s macramé!

Even Lions May Fall...

... and this Lioness is teetering dangerously close to the edge.

Alibrandi launched the film clip for their debut single 'Even Lions May Fall' today. What with the hardships of a sub editor combined with looming-assessment-deadline induced panic, watching this was the only fun thing Katie Day did today.

As a result of this feeling of impending doom over my unfinished assignments, I am taking myself AWOL until the weekend. By then I will (hopefully) have handed my final assessments in and will be officially free from university for the semester. I am also very much looking forward to celebrating this ecstatic feeling of freedom on Friday night with Alibrandi at the Zoo supporting No Quarter (June 10). If you are in Brisbane come and have a glass of bubbly with me!

Until then, I foresee endless coffee, barely any sleep and panic attacks by the dozen. Here's hoping I make it.

Caldo Verde

Another of my truly amazing vegan creations cooked straight from the delicious Veggie num num. I made a few minor alterations, mostly due to supermarket limitations. Instead of marjoram I used rosemary and oregano, and as I am not a fan of vego sausages, I chose to use sautaed mushrooms rather than sausages or eggplant. For the greens I just used a whole packet of spinach diced, and as per the original I served with fresh lemon squeezed over and drizzeled with olive oil.

Oh my, it was amazing! Topped off with some left over Turkish bread from breakfast, this delicious winter warming soup was like a little hearty party for my tastebuds. Try it, you won't be disappointed!

Scrumptious Breakky squared.

One of my favourite things about the weekends is breakfast. During the week I usually scarf down breakfast as I am running out the door or doing my makeup, or in front of my computer at work, if I even eat it at all. But on the weekend, I love sitting and having a cup of coffee and some toast or cooking up a delicious feast.

I think I outdid myself with brunch yesterday and best of all, it was totally spontaneous. My lovely friend Suz called me to say she was in the neighbourhood and as fate would have it, I actually had food in the house to offer her.

We fried up mushrooms, garlic and Spanish onion, served on a bed of spinach, with fresh avocado seasoned with lemon juice and salt, (TRY IT!) fried free range eggs, topped off with fresh Turkish bread. It was the most delicious brunch I have had in a long time! And it's always so much nicer cooking for someone, rather than just myself.

The Turkish bread was also awesome this morning for breakfast, toasted and slathered in butter and vegemite, a childhood favourite that I will never get sick of.

All in all, it's been a good weekend breakfast-wise.

Quick moisturiser fix.

I love moisturiser, especially in winter. And I tend to put it on right before going to bed, but consequently my bedside table becomes littered with all manner of hand and body creams, and that just looks ugly and untidy.

I had a brainwave last night to transfer the moisturiser into a cute little jar (I have a stash of empty ones in the cupboard) so that I could leave it on my bedside table always, and not hate how ugly the bottle of Palmers Cocoa Butter looked next to my sweet alarm clock, vintage doileys and pile of penguins. I painted the lid with remnants of a sample pot, tied some string around and viola ... perfection

A Modern Magical Fairy Tale.

Get comfy my children, I’m going to tell you a story of true magic.

Once upon a time in a slightly grungy city in Australia there lived a young woman called Katie. She was a self confessed trashbag who liked a drink, loved music and had a penchant for anything that made her feel passionate. Most of the time she was a happy girl, she had a family in a sunny faraway land and another urban adopted family that both loved her. But sometimes she felt discontented with hopeless emptiness of life, mostly when she had been cooped up at home too long avoiding the world and procrastinating doing things that needed to be done. Other times Katie saw glimmers of magic.

One May night not so long ago when the sun had sunk behind the horizon early in the evening and there was the sharp chill of winter in the air, Katie felt that magic of the world. She ventured out of her cosy little wooden house filled with her favourite things and into the seedy underbelly of the city. In this part of the world there was a heaviness in the air and the streets seemed darker than they should in the glow of the buzzing nightlife woven throughout. Some people feared this part of the city, others didn’t understand it and some downright detested everything it stood for. But Katie felt more at home there every time she visited, over the years she came to even think that she belonged in this part of the world.

On this night and on this evening her trip into the shadowy part of town took her to a dimly lit bar decorated with crudely painted brick walls adorned with Persian rugs and a long silver bar with specials written behind it in white chalk, stark on black. Katie was there on a very special mission, although she didn’t know it at the time.

There was a band of eccentric musicians set to perform and their posse of family, lovers and friends had come to hear the magic bleed from their instruments. The band and their band of misfit followers had all been busy with their collectively respectable lives and had not seen each other for many months. As she affectionately greeted her friends, Katie felt enveloped into the warm arms of familiarity, as if greeting long lost loved ones.

Together they drank and talked away the hour before the band took the stage. They laughed at stories of broken hearts and failed fishing trips, congratulated those preparing to make grand public declarations of their love for each other and caught up on all the news in between. Katie revelled in the company of her friends and the marvelled at their generosity when she tasted the magic of a scotch handed to her.

As the first notes of the band’s opening song resonated down the long, narrow room, Katie felt overcome with a familiar flood of joy. She has seen the band perform countless times before, in good venues and bad, on nights when guitars were out of tune and nights when everything went perfectly, but she had never seen them play like they did that night. Their songs were injected with new energy, some having being rearranged, while other were simply staple classics. The five on stage each radiated with elation at playing their creations to an adoring crowd, dancing and jumping and cheering along with the music.

Katie was lucky, she had felt moments of magic many times in her life. But as she clumsily danced to the music and sung along with the lyrics, aware that she was probably uttering the wrong words at times, she knew she was watching magic appear right before her eyes.

As the clock struck over into the wee hours, the magic continued to linger. It shimmered in the world until the last of the Alibrandi family closed their eyes at nights’ end, then it evaporated into each of their hearts, where that magical night will live forever.

Or at least until they all come together again.

The End.

Vegan Bolognaise = Vegolonaise!

I'm new to this vegetarian thing. I'm not a pure vego, unlike one of my friends who was born and raised without meat and has never even tasted the deliciousness of roast lamb or BBQ pork buns. My other fellow vego/vegan friends are all much more sensitive than I am and after watching Earthlings feel they could never, EVER have another animal's death on their conscience. I feel guilty even admitting this: but sometimes I really miss meat.

I never allow myself to say this out loud. Probably because most of my friends and family thought I was going through some weird hippy faze or a made up detox when I gave up the animal carcasses three months ago. No one really thought it would stick. I can't blame them really, in the past I have ripped a cook chook apart with my bare hands while the soft flesh was still warm, only to shove the drumstick in my mouth and gnaw away happily like a Neanderthal.

Thoughts of never eating mum's Osso buco again or secretly sneaking pork crackling before serving the roast or enjoying delicious Danish Christmas food like roast duck and frikadeller bring so much woe to my heart that I am still not sure if going without these things is worth the principle of not eating meat. But so far I’ve been able to push these things from my mind most of the time because I’m not at home smelling mum’s cooking, my carnivorous housemates rarely cook a roast and Christmas is still seven months away. The meat I miss most of all are my everyday favourites, staples of my meat-eating life, like spaghetti bolognaise.

So when I came across this recipe from the delectable Veggie num num I was pretty excited to give it a whirl and maybe even kill my craving to hoe into the meat again. While I am extremely proud of my efforts over the last three months and have cooked some amazing vego and vegan dishes, this was the first time I tried to make a complete meaty dish into a vegan/vego version, without previous glowing testimonials from friends.

I wasn’t sure how this would turn out, and I was even tempted to ignore the recipe and just make my own up (I was once a kick-ass spag bol aficionado!) But I put my trust in the geniuses behind Veggie num num and was not disappointed. The only changes I made to the recipe was substituting brown lentils for tinned Sanitarium nut mince (available in the health food aisle at the supermarket) as it was already gracing the shelves in my pantry and adding a grated carrot. I also couldn’t quite handle the wholegrain pasta the first time round (I am just not a fan) and used regular spaghetti instead.

The result was vegan deliciousness that was tomatoey and tasty and was freakily almost exactly like spag bol. See for yourself!

So eager to taste was I that I neglected to focus the camera correctly, but you get the idea.

How To: Make Homemade Body Scrub

This stuff I had lying around the house went from this:

To delectable and effective homemade body scrub below! Perfect to combat the winter scaly skin.

Lately it's been getting a little chilly in Brisbane, and consequently my elbows and my legs have slowing becoming more and more scaly. Luckily, before my skin became so scaly and weird that I morphed into a fish, I remembered I had seen an awesome DIY recipe to make your own body scrub.

Don't get me wrong, I love expensive beauty products as much as the next gal (or well groomed guy) but I don't like the price tags, particularly when you are buying products that are not tested on animals (apparently not inhumanely slathering rabbits with lipstick means the product costs twice as much as one made by torturing animals). So this little project seemed like the perfect solution. Admittedly I was sceptical at how well the scrub would turn out, but after a test run in the shower this evening I am thoroughly impressed. This sweet scrub come through with top marks, and my skin feels soft and ladylike again.

I used:
  • A cute jar
  • 2-3 cups of raw sugar (or however much fits in your jar)
  • 2 tbs of ancient massage oil I had in the cupboard and had never used (you could substitute this for olive or apricot oil)
  • 10-12 drops of lavender essential oil, also forgotten in the back of my cupboard (you could use vanilla essence if you were just searching for stuff around the house)
Best of all, you just have to mix the ingredients together well, stuff them in a jar and you're done. This whole thing took less than five minutes to complete! To fully perfect the body scrub, I plan on keeping my eye out in the op shops for a tea spoon with a hole in the handle, so I can attach it to the string and have a little dipping spoon for my body scrub.

Try it, you won't be disappointed!
